The tactical turn-based role-playing game from developer inXile Entertainment, The Bard’s Tale IV, will receive additional content in the form of The Bard’s Tale IV: Director’s Cut. This expanded version of the game is scheduled to come out on August 27 for the PC (Windows, Mac, and Linux), PlayStation 4 and Xbox One.

The Bard’s Tale IV: Barrows Deep is a dungeon crawler that was intended to be the true successor for the original The Bard’s Tale trilogy of role-playing games released in 1985. Developer inXile Entertainment initially made a spin-off game of the same name in 2004. By 2015, CEO Brian Fargo (known for his work on role-playing games Fallout and Wasteland) planned and funded The Bard’s Tale IV through Kickstarter. Fast forward to September 27, 2018, when the game was released on Windows to lukewarm responses, with praise for its role-playing elements and gameplay mechanics bogged down by technical issues.

Set over a hundred years after the events of the original game, players are tasked with fighting against a patiently lurking evil ready to disturb the peace that reigned for so long in Skara Brae. You have the freedom to customize your characters strengths and play as either a Bard, Fighter, Practitioner, or Rogue. In your travels and adventures to become the hero the realm sorely needs, you will meet colorful characters that can accompany you on your quest. You can also customize these companions’ skills and abilities, creating your very own party that’s suited for your playstyle. These choices dictate what approach you will eventually take to defeat the game.

The Bard’s Tale IV: Director’s Cut adds more character customization options, new items and foes, a revised UI, and a free expansion dungeon. Also, as confirmed through an interaction on InXile's YouTube video trailer for the Director’s Cut, owners of The Bard’s Tale IV: Barrows Deep will receive the Director’s Cut as a free update. The Bard’s Tale IV: Director’s Cut will also be available on Xbox GamePass. Cross saving between Xbox One and PC is a feature as well.

Original backers and newcomers can unite for some more dungeon crawling goodness, as The Bard’s Tale IV: Director’s Cut will come out on August 27, 2019.
