Assassin's Creed Is Going Anime Thanks To Netflix Castlevania Producer

An anime series for Assassin's Creed has been revealed Ubisoft

Assassin’s Creed has taken on the gaming and movie worlds, albeit with very mixed results. Now the franchise is looking into a new venture: anime.

This news comes from a Facebook post made by Adi Shankar, a producer who most recently worked on the Castlevania cartoon coming to Netflix in a few days.

“I'm happy to let you guys know that I've selected my next project! I played the first edition of Assassin's Creed the year I moved to Los Angeles to pursue my dream,” Shankar wrote. “At that moment I knew absolutely no one in the industry and could never have imagined that one day Ubisoft would ask me to take the world of Assassin's Creed and create an original story set in it as an anime series. If anyone tells you not to follow your passion in life they are wrong.”

Shankar did not reveal any other information about the project. It’s unknown who the new series will star, if it will be only set in the past or even where the series will air. With all these unanswered questions, you know what time it is. Speculation time!

Shankar’s past production projects have been a mix of feature-length movies, the Castlevania series and a handful of shorts made for the internet. This shows that, outside of motion pictures, Shankar seems to work predominantly with internet viewers and online services. A smart move would be for a streaming site like Netflix or Amazon Prime to buy up the show, especially considering the target audience is likely gamers. Gamers tend to be more technically savvy and lean towards cord-cutting, so a spot on a traditional TV network might not be the best bet.

As for who will take center stage, Ubisoft has a large cast of characters to choose from. Ezio, the star of Assassin’s Creed 2, Brotherhood and Revelations is the most fleshed out character, but he’s also the most explored. A smarter move would be to pick a character from an upcoming game like Assassin’s Creed Origins or creating a new character for the show would be a smart move. This allows for either promotion of the upcoming game or opens a door to create a new game with the new character.

Whatever this anime series ends up being, it’s likely the project Ubisoft had previously teased. In a reddit AMA, Assassin’s Creed Head of Content Aymar Azaizia confirmed there would be a TV series starring Assassins and Templar. He did not provide further details about the project at that time, either.
