While we have no idea what changes are in store for Arrow Season 6, best believe things are going to be different. Literally every character close to Oliver was left on an exploding island with no way out. While it’s a safe bet not everyone will die, lord knows there will be some catastrophic consequences to Adrian Chase’s actions. But Stephen Amell left this cliffhanger behind to answer one question during a recent Heroes and Villains panel.

Speaking on his character’s transformation in Season 6, Amell hopes (according to CinemaBlend) whatever happens on Lian Yu helps Oliver become more like the comic book version of Green Arrow.

Amell said Oliver in the comics has some “really interesting qualities that make him unique,” which he’d like to explore. Let’s just hope he leaves the blonde goatee behind.

“I've said that it's very, very important that if Oliver doesn't take away lessons from Season 5 and doesn't keep doing the things that have led to this catastrophic event, the character stops being interesting to me,” Amell said. “So I hope that part of that, in Season 6 and if we have seasons beyond that, I hope that part of that is we get back to a lot of the tenets that people recognize from the comics. And that of course is humor and a socially conscious, slightly liberal superhero.”

Amell’s version of the character undoubtedly takes himself more seriously than his comic book counterpart, who has a dry sense of humor and a progressive moral code. The series did, however, take a hint from the comics in Season 5 when Oliver became Mayor of Star City. He advocated for gun control and had a lot of sympathy for the city’s lower-class citizens.

In the series earlier seasons Oliver chose to open up his club, Verdant, in the Glades, which was known as the bad part of town where street-savvy Roy Harper was from. His time spent fighting for his life on the island made him less materialistic and egotistical. That said, his desire to kill early on sort of masked this softer side. In Season 5, Adrian Chase certainly brought the villainous side of Oliver out of him once again.

But it looks like Oliver might get back on track in Season 6, stepping up that political awareness with more outspoken liberal views. His newfound parenthood could also have something to do with that, since he now has to worry about the next generation and not only himself.
