Words With Friends Celebrating 12th Anniversary

Happy Birthday.
Happy Birthday. Zynga

Words With Friends is celebrating its 12th birthday with a two-week in-game festival. The game actually celebrated its birthday yesterday and even proclaimed July 19 as “National Words With Friends Day.”

In a statement, President of Publishing at Zynga Bernard Kim revealed that Words With Friends is no longer a game but already a part of the culture. He went on to say that since the initial launch, the game has become a global sensation.

Week One

The first week of the celebration starts July 19 and lasts until July 25. There’s going to be a community-wide competitive event called “Choose Your Side.” Players can choose between the “Early Bird” or the “Night Owl” teams. They then play Classic matches and get points for their teams by completing moves. When the week-long event ends, the winning team gets a limited edition reward with the other team getting a consolation prize.

Week Two

For this week, it’s going to be about the single-player mode “Influence This!” Solo Challenge where players challenge social media influencers. These celebrities are going to represent one rung in the challenge ladder. This event starts July 27 and runs through August 1.

The second week also sees the arrival of some in-game goodies. Players can take on the 12th Birthday Weekly Challenge and in return be rewarded with the “Birthday badge.”

The new Quick Play event, meanwhile, has players enjoy a specially themed Duels game board, which has the shape of a birthday cake. Players can also get their very own limited edition Words With Friends 12th Birthday Tile Style, offered on the final week.

Sweepstakes

All throughout the festival, players have the chance to turn their birthday wishes into cash. It’s all due to the special sweepstakes event from July 19 to August 2. Players can visit here for a chance to win:

  • Grand Prize: $12,000
  • 2nd Place: $6,000
  • 3rd Place: $3,000

Players can get additional entries by taking part in the Choose Your Side event or the Solo Challenge.

Words With Friends was launched back in 2009 on mobile devices.
