Rocket League has been a tremendously successful online multiplayer game, with over 75 million users who have played the car-themed soccer game. Developer Psyonix recently announced that the game will be going free-to-play shortly. However, the developer did not confirm a specific date on when the game is supposed to go free-to-play.

The announcement was made on the developer's official social media accounts. Following the announcement, Psyonix also had to make some adjustments to existing game modes. The first adjustments were made to the Tournaments and Challenge systems. It is also expected that Rocket League will receive an update that will enable cross-platform inventory management and Rocket Pass program, and a competitive ranking system. All you need to do after the update is link your game to an Epic Games account.

Rocket League first launched on Windows and PlayStation 4 in June 2016. Physical copies of the games were sold for PS4 and Xbox One. A year later, Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment stepped in to take care of the distribution duties. In 2016, some copies for macOS and Linux were also distributed. Rocket League will be going free-to-play by Summer 2020.

Here's what the official website for Rocket League says on the subject: "Rocket League is going release on the Epic Games Store on PC the same time it goes free to play. This version of the game will be identical to the version found on other platforms and will feature cross-platform play anywhere the players can play Rocket League, including between the Epic Games Store and Steam."

Once the game goes free-to-play on Epic Games Store, it can no longer be downloaded on Steam. However, people who have purchased the game on Steam will still continue to get regular fixes and updates. Psyonix has already reimbursed players who bought Rocket League on any platform by offering the following benefits:

  • Every Rocket League-branded DLC released before free-to-play
  • "Est. 20XX" title. This will help as it displays the year when the player first started playing Rocket League
  • 200+ Common items upgraded to "Legacy" quality
  • Golden Cosmos Boost
  • Dieci-Oro Wheels
  • Huntress Player Banner
