The Walking Dead Season 7 premiere will be a tough one for fans, but the big Lucille deaths need to happen. Yes, we said DEATHS because it seems likely more than one person will die when the show returns. Here’s why people need to die in order for Negan to exist in The Walking Dead universe.

Glenn’s a goner

Let’s start with the hard truth: Glenn has to die. Why? Because he’s the last symbol of hope in the zombie apocalypse. Despite everything Glenn has experienced, he’s been able to keep his humanity. He hasn’t had a mental breakdown like Rick, Carol or Morgan. Glenn has stayed true to himself; he’s a good person who’s willing to do whatever it takes to help the people he loves. Negan swinging Lucille at Glenn’s head will destroy the last ray of hope for people, but it also solidifies Negan’s status as a villain.

No one will be on Negan’s side after they witness him beating Glenn to death. Glenn is the golden child of the apocalypse, the one person Rick can consistently count on. He is the person who saved Rick and reunited him with his family. Without Glenn, the world’s a bit darker and serves as a reminder of how precious life is in the post-apocalypse. Sorry Glenn, you’ll be missed, but you time has come.

And so is Abraham

Both Abraham and Glenn are gone in The Walking Dead comics. Abraham never meets Negan, so there has to be a reason why the show kept him around for this one scene. Quite frankly, Abraham’s comic book death was lame. He was shot with an arrow by Dwight; it went right through his skull. His death was random and didn’t really serve a purpose. Now that Abraham is around Negan, he might actually get the epic death his character deserves.

Abraham’s first instinct will always be to protect. He sees Sasha on one side of him and Rosita on the other. He cares for them enough to sacrifice his life. There was a point where Abraham was ready to die until Eugene came along and gave him a purpose. He found purpose again through his love for Sasha. If Glenn is the symbol of hope, then Abraham is the symbol of strength and perseverance. Negan wants to destroy Rick’s confidence, killing both Abraham and Glenn will accomplish this. It will also justify the Season 6 cliffhanger everyone hated, but we digress.

Of course, we could be wrong. There’s a chance Negan kills other characters, but whoever it is will serve a purpose. The show needs to solidify Negan’s status in the show, and these deaths will accomplish just that.

The Walking Dead Season 7 premieres Oct. 23 on AMC.
