Michonne is glad Rick finally got back to being the “Old Rick,” because she couldn’t stand being around the person he’d become in The Walking Dead Season 7.

Danai Gurira spoke with Entertainment Weekly about her character Michonne’s feelings towards Rick. After the big confrontation with Negan in The Walking Dead Season 7, Michonne watched Rick’s psyche deteriorate. She was ready to fight back, but went along with Rick’s plan to let the Saviors run the show. It was difficult for Michonne to accept and became a source of tensions between the two characters.

Now, Rick and Michonne are on the same page and they’re ready to fight for their community.

“Really, all that she does now is about who she loves and it’s about this community,” Gurira told EW . “So, even that rage and that desire to get back at Negan was all rooted in the love for these people, and the horrific losses that they just experienced, and how it’s just not in her nature to just take that and say, ‘Okay, I’ll now submit to you because you’ve got us really good.’ No. No. That’s not who she is.”

Gurira also said the show will be “really, really riveting” when it returns in February. The drama and threats in Alexandria will only increase throughout the second half of The Walking Dead Season 7. Gurira also teased the group is ready to fight, but won’t use the same tactics we’ve seen in the past. Rick will be a lot smarter when dealing with Negan, but not everyone will be on his side.

Lennie James, who plays Morgan on the show, recently echoed Gurira’s sentiments during an interview with ComicBook.com. James said the group is preparing for war and will pick sides. Not everyone will be fighting with Rick.

"On one level, it’s very obvious that we’re getting ready for war, and everyone who knows the comic books knows that we’re about to go into a couple of years of war," James told ComicBook.com. "I don’t know how long that’s going to pan out in the television series, but it goes on for a while in the comics. So we’re about to go to war, and the second block [of eight episodes] is about meeting the protagonists and certain events that are going to decide what sides people take. And it’s not going to be a clear division of labour, let me say."

James added, "There are some people who go to the dark side who are going to take you by surprise, and there are some people who are going to come over to the light – and that’s all a matter of perspective.”
