It’s been a long time since we’ve heard an update regarding Overkill Software’s The Walking Dead. Payday announced the game was in development back in summer 2014, with the game making an appearance at E3 2015 . Overkill’s The Walking Dead was supposed to release sometime in 2017, but Payday announced they would push the game to 2018.
Though the game has been in development for years, neither the studio nor The Walking Dead Creator Robert Kirkman want to rush the process. According to GameRant , Kirkman stated an interview with the devs at Overkill that the studio is taking its time to make the game “as great as it can be.” Kirkman added, “We’re not making a date here. We’re making a great game.”
Starbreeze Studios, the owners of Overkill, released the first official teaser for Overkill’s The Walking Dead this December. The studio showcased Aiden, a young man who worked in Washington, D.C. before the deadly outbreak. Payday confirmed the game is a four-player co-op multiplayer FPS, but gave no word if there’s a single-player campaign. According to a news release, “players will band together with up to three friends on a variety of missions and raids, securing supplies and survivors to strengthen their base camp against the threat of both the dead and the living - by any means necessary.”
There will be several playable characters, each with their own special abilities, skill trees, squad roles, play styles and background stories. Much like the TV universe, the goal is to work together to take down walker herds or some unfriendly faces.
It’s possible the game will feature some familiar characters from The Walking Dead comics, but don’t expect to see any TV actors reprise their roles in the game. The game is set in The Walking Dead comic book universe and not the world of the TV series, which fans are probably welcoming at this point. The Walking Dead TV series has strayed away drastically from the source material with the potential death of you-know-who.
It’s also interesting to see how Overkill has strayed away from an open-world RPG and went with a FPS for Overkill’s The Walking Dead. The interesting storylines are a major draw of any Walking Dead game, which studios like Telltale Games have capitalized on and made their own.
