Ubisoft Cancels 'Alterra,' Its 'Animal Crossing'-Inspired Project From 3 Years Ago, Says Report

Ubisoft's take on 'Animal Crossing' may no longer be happening.

One of the much-awaited developments from Ubisoft, "Alterra," is now reportedly canceled by the studio after three years of working on the new cozy simulation game for various platforms.

When news about codename "Alterra" first appeared, many were excited as it was reportedly delivering a game inspired by "Animal Crossing."

Ubisoft Cancels 'Alterra'

According to a report from Insider Gaming, a staff member from Ubisoft working on the codename "Alterra" project has revealed that they recently received notice that the game will no longer be moving forward.

The publication revealed that this makes it the seventh game to be canceled by Ubisoft this year and follows a confirmation from the company earlier this year, which announced that it axed six game developments.

Ubisoft's restructuring of the company, which led to the cancellation of six projects, did not initially talk about the said "Alterra" game, so this led the public to believe that it was still set to move forward.

Prior to this, details behind "Alterra's" development were scarce, but reports believed that its elements were heavily inspired by Nintendo's iconic simulation game, "Animal Crossing." Alleged early game images showed "voxel" art styles and Funko Pop-esque NPCs.

Alongside this, its gameplay was said to also feature "Minecraft"-like building mechanics, said ComicBook.

'Animal Crossing' Rival Already Has 3 Years in Development

There is still no official word from Ubisoft regarding the project "Alterra" and its cancellation, but it is important to note that it has already been three years since it was rumored to be in development.

The game was first made known to the public in 2024, and since then, the claims said that it has already started its development under the French gaming company. That said, it remains unconfirmed how much work Ubisoft and its developers have already put into the project before the latest shutdown news.

The news also comes after "Pokémon Pokopia's" successful release for the Switch 2, with the game also widely regarded as an "Animal Crossing" dupe set in the world of "Pokémon."

The report shared that there are no layoffs attached to "Alterra's" cancellation, and staff are currently being moved to other developments instead.
