Last week, The Expanse left off as Detective Miller, Jim Holden, and the Rocinante crew finally find Julia Mao perched against a wall in the back room of a hotel covered in a mysterious substance. It’s unclear if Mao is actually dead, infected by some kind of alien virus, or both. The 2-hour season finale will likely provide answers to the slew of remaining questions regarding Julia Mao and the big conspiracy involving the OPA, Earth and Mars.
SyFy’s 3 minute sneak peek takes place 7 weeks prior to the upcoming episode. The Scopuli is pictured approaching the same asteroid Jim Holden and Rocinante crew went to investigate under the direction of Fred Johnson last episode. In the preview, Julia Mao is still alive piloting the Scopuli. Her crew spots an approaching ship which they think is just a light transport. Referring to her father Jules-Pierre Mao, Julia says, “That’s his weapon on that ship, the Belters need to know what it is so it can't be used against us.”The Scopuli sets course to intercept and board the ship, but not before a gunship, The Anubis, breaches their ship. A super-soldier with a futuristic spacesuit cuts through the Scopuli and approaches the crew with a gun as the clip ends.
Not much is revealed in the second 30-second trailer. “Eros Station has a radiation breach,” blasts over a loudspeaker. Jim Holden, Detective Miller and the Rocinante crew are standing over zombied humans sprawled across the ground. “We’re dead,” Holden says in the last few moments of the clip.
SyFy’s description of the final two episodes, “Critical Mass” and “Leviathan Wakes” reads: With Holden and Miller uneasy allies, the truth behind Julie Mao’s disappearance is revealed. Avasarala uncovers a game-changing secret.
