‘Super Mario Maker’ NX: Nintendo Should Port ‘Mario Maker’ To The Next Console

Super Mario Maker is the surprise hit of 2015, and racked up a slew of Game of the Year nominations and awards… plus over a million sales in the United States in just a few months. That’s pretty good for a game that sounded, on the surface, like some kind of wonky level editor. But Super Mario Maker quickly became much more, thanks to the community and to Nintendo helping things along a little bit and streamlining the game. And Super Mario Maker is likely to continue strongly into 2016 and beyond… so much so that Nintendo should consider bringing the game to the Nintendo NX.

Super Mario Maker NX: Almost A No-Brainer

Super Mario Maker isn’t really the kind of game that benefits from sequels… don’t expect a Zelda Maker anytime soon. Instead, constant updates can keep the game fresh through new features, new blocks and that sort of thing. Paid DLC can keep Super Mario Maker profitable for years… but with one condition.

The game came out near the end of the Wii U lifecycle—chances are good that the Nintendo NX will launch this year, and even if it doesn’t, the Wii U games pipeline is looking rather thin. A year or two from now, gamers and Nintendo fans will be moving over to the Nintendo NX, especially if the system does have the strong launch lineup Nintendo claims as a primary focus.

A robust and powerful Super Mario Maker port, with even more new features and possibly even new world styles (Super Mario Bros. 2, anyone?), would be a perfect launch title for the Nintendo NX… as long as existing levels were broadly compatible. Such a move would immediately encourage Mario Maker fans to invest in the Nintendo NX to get a shot at making and playing new levels. However, if the game stays on Wii U, the large Mario Maker community will stay right there with it. The game’s long life could be an incentive not to upgrade, and Nintendo certainly doesn’t want that.

Besides, Super Mario Maker, unlike the Wii U, could end up being around for a really long time. Even with the existing tools and the steady stream of DLC, new and better levels are emerging all the time. A few years from now, who knows what might be possible? If the game comes to the Nintendo NX, we’re likely to find out.
