South Park season 19 ended with a bang, if not quite the way we expected, and it was the best season of South Park at least since Stan got old. Like much great art, it satisfied my needs, and left me yearning for even more. Of course, more is coming—the show is running through at least 2019. But I’m sorry to say we have a long, long wait—next September, at least.

South Park Season 20 Premiere Date: September 2016, A World Away

South Park season 20 is going to follow the formula of the last few seasons—it’s a short one, just a ten episode order, and it’s no longer split into two parts, one in the spring and one in the fall. That was always a weird structure in the first place, but now, looking back on it, it was kind of nice. After all, we got South Park in the spring and also South Park in the fall. Now, it’s just in the fall and just for ten weeks.

Of course, there’s a reason we get less South Park now. The alternative was getting none of it—Matt and Trey only agreed to keep doing the show with an abbreviated season, airing only in the fall. That’s less work than before, and it gives them the whole spring to work on other projects (like Book of Mormon, South Park: The Stick of Truth and South Park: The Fractured But Whole). And you know what? As a result, we got the best season of South Park in ages, after several generally lackluster ones. It’s worth the wait.

But man, after South Park season 19, it sucks to wait another year for more. The ending teased that South Park is actually going to be politically correct now, which I don’t believe for a second, and also that PC Principal is going to stick around. That, at least, is great news. Mr. Mackey has had his own revelation too, and Mr. Garrison and Ms. Jenner are running for president in 2016. South Park’s take on what looks to be the craziest U.S. election in years… that too is something to really look forward to. But it’s going to be a long wait, and no other show has such sharp satire. Let’s just hope Trump is out of the race by then, or even South Park won’t be able to top reality!
