Spotify Premium For Family: Signing Up With Friends Is Easier Than You Think

With the recent upgrades to the Spotify Premium for Family subscriptions, Spotify family plans can now have up to six accounts under one plan. This makes Spotify’s family plan equivalent to offerings from Google Play or Apple Music and with the three months of premium for $0.99 deal, you and your friends can enjoy Spotify premium essentially for free this entire summer.

Of course, the terms and conditions of Spotify Premium for Family mean you and your friends all have to share the same residential address to qualify. But Spotify uses the honor system to doublecheck this and doesn’t directly ask you for an address. And while we’re on the same subject, there are currently four states with no sales tax: Montana, Oregon, Delaware and New Hampshire.

Secondly, while the $0.99 three month summer deal is advertised for single premium accounts, Spotify allows you to upgrade this discounted subscription into a family plan. You may lose a month in the process due to some quirk in the system ($30, 2 months for $14.99 or 3 months for $9.99), but two months for $0.99 is nothing to scoff at. For an offer redeemed on May 30, the subscription expiration date would be July 30.

Here’s what you need to know (Links Are For Spotify U.S. Users):

  • Don’t have an account yet? Go to this link to sign up.
    • You may need a new account to be able to use the $0.99 offer. You can check your eligibility here (or here).
    • Once you’ve signed up for the premium offer, switch your account to a family plan via this link. Once you click the button, it should automatically port over with no extra charge.
  • Your friend’s pre-existing Spotify accounts can be added to your new family plan easily, meaning no playlist migration or anything of the sort is needed.
    • Go to this page to invite someone. You can either manually send them the invite URL, or send it to their email address.
      • Once they open the link, all they have to do is hit redeem and they’re added to your plan.
  • If your friends are already paying for Spotify Premium:
    • Their subscription credit will be used first before they are ported over to your account.
  • If any of your friends signed up/are paying for Spotify via iTunes or some other third party service, they will first need to cancel their subscription before signing up with you.
  • If you and your friends have a bad breakup, don’t fret.
    • Once the administrator of the Spotify family plan stops paying, all the Spotify accounts will simply revert back to the free tier, disconnected.
  • Note: Spotify family plans only work for Spotify accounts based in the same country.
    • So unfortunately Aunt Mary in England isn’t going to be able to take advantage of your streaming music windfall.

Hats off to Spotify, because the entire process is painless. Considering it's essentially free and that you get to keep control over your Spotify account, there really is no reason you and your friends (read: roommates) aren’t saving on the monthly subscription fees.
