PlayStation 5 Rumors Start As Sony Plans A New Console, Not A Reiteration

Sony says the PS5 is the next console from the company Sony

The PS4 Pro and Xbox One X have left gamers wondering about the future of consoles. Will we keep getting upgraded versions of these machines again and again, or will there be something different coming next? According to Sony, it seems the company is set on a PlayStation 5.

This information comes from two different sources. The first is an interview German outlet had with Sony Interactive Entertainment of America President Shawn Layden. When asked if the PS4 Pro is the start of an evolutionary model similar to cell phones, Layden dismissed the idea. “ The pro is really only to offer advantages such as 4K resolutions and HMD for players who can and want to use that,” he said.

When asked if this means there will be a real PlayStation 5 console, Layden said yes, but added it would be some time before any announcements.

Which brings us to the second source of information on a potential PS5, this time from Japanese outlet PC Watch. By looking at the production plans for AMD, PC Watch predicts a PS5 release in either late 2019 or 2020. This is because of availability of different CPUs, with the article basing the PS5 around a 7nm chip.

The PC Watch article is highly speculative, so take what’s written there with a grain of salt. That said, a PS5 releasing in 2019 or 2020 seems way too soon. The PS3 released in 2006 and the PS4 released in 2014. That’s a seven-year gap. That would mean a PS5 would come in 2021 at the earliest, but that doesn’t take into account the PS4 Pro, which could easily stretch out this console generation a few extra years.

The big takeaway from all this is that Sony plans to do a new console next, instead of another iteration on the PS4 or another slight upgrade from the PS4 Pro. Whatever the PS5 ends up being, we won’t know about it for a number of years.

So what do you think? Are you interested in seeing where consoles go moving forward? What do you think the next generation of gaming will be like? Let us know your thoughts in the comments section below.
