Regardless of Sonic the Hedgehog’s rocky start last year with that rough CGI trailer, the adaptation managed to rally back earning the title for the biggest opening weekend for any video game movie ever. Surprisingly, the studio behind Sonic took complaints from the fans very seriously and redesigned the character for the speedster after a three-month delay to the initial release.

Sonic rang up an estimated $57 million at domestic box offices to overtake last year’s Detective Pikachu at $54.3 million and a whopping $100 million globally.

Proving particularly popular in both Mexico and the UK, Sonic the Hedgehog now stands as the highest-grossing video game movie during its opening weekend and could become the biggest holiday opening weekend of the year.

According to critics, Sonic the Hedgehog is just short of Detective Pikachu. Rotten Tomatoes scores show a 69% approval rating for Pikachu, while Sonic the Hedgehog has 64%.

Along with well-known celebrities like Jim Carrey as Doctor Eggman and Ben Schwartz as Sonic, James Marsden also serves as a co-star of the film. The success of the film was due to all their hard work and their personalities in the film.

In other entertainment news, Castlevania is getting a new season on Netflix and Onward releases on March 6.

So, what are your thoughts on the changes applied to Sonic The Hedgehog? Did you think it was the right way to get people back? Personally, I think they did an amazing job with all the changes and made the character look more game accurate. Whatever your thoughts may be, let us know in the comments below.
