With 14 episodes announced for Rick and Morty Season 3 (Season 1 had 11, Season 2 had 10) one of them will probably be “Interdimensional Cable 3,” a seasonal episode tradition that bucks Rick and Morty’s typical structural rigorousness for improvisational bits pulled from TV stations across the multiverse. In the meantime, Rick and Morty co-creators Dan Harmon and Justin Roiland allowed themselves to be cajoled into a bit of improvisation for Yahoo TV.

While improvising commercials for Old Mayonnaise Emporium and Big Bad Bill’s House of Barking Dogs and Chainsaws, Roiland immediately busts out new characters with his typical rambling bonhomie. Meanwhile, Harmon mostly laughs.

Not only is this video basically “Interdimensional Cable 2.1,” it also seems to reveal something fundamental about the working relationship between the Rick and Morty co-creators. Roiland immediately dives into jokes. He’s a gushing font of creativity who doesn’t really care whether or not anything makes much sense.

“When we record them, I’ll be in the booth for six hours,” Roiland says in the video. Here then is Harmon’s job: boxing out the best Roiland moments and giving them shape and structure. That Rick and Morty can feel both so freewheeling while adhering to the kind of dense plotting Harmon deployed on Community is the show’s greatest strength.

This balance is what made “ Interdimensional Cable 2: Tempting Fate,” with its taut B-plot (and Werner Herzog guest appearance!), a much stronger episode than “Rixty Minutes,” the first season’s improvisational episode.

Rick and Morty Season 3 doesn’t premiere until the end of this year, which means we may not see “Interdimensional Cable 3” until 2017, but it’s good to see that Roiland still has his capacity for spewing Turbulent Juice all over any given subject.
