PlayStation and WNBA Entered Multi-Year Partnership

A new collab. Sony Interactive

Sony Interactive Entertainment has entered a multi-year partnership with the Women's National Basketball Association (WNBA). Under the agreement, PlayStation is going to be the official console and marketing partner of the WNBA.

Under this partnership, PlayStation will explore different marketing opportunities with the WNBA starting with the AT&T WNBA All-Star Game, set to take place in Las Vegas this July 15. More details on this partnership will be released in the lead-up to the All-Star Game.

In a statement, Andrea Perez, Senior Vice President of Brand, Product and Services Marketing at Sony Interactive Entertainment, revealed that at PlayStation, they've always believed in the spirit that "play has no limits." She added that women's sports, especially the WNBA, is one of those cultural spaces able to better define that spirit. Perez continued that they're happy to have partnered with the WNBA and plans to remain investing in the next generation of women athletes. She concluded that they've continued looking for new and unique ways to elevate and share the stories of these women athletes.

WNBA Chief Marketing Officer Phil Cook said that they're thrilled with this partnership as a way to engage their fanbase in new and immersive ways. He added that a lot of fans are passionate about games and they're looking forward to seeing a new level for their tech savvy fans to experience the game.

PlayStation Playmakers Program

Back in February 2023, Sony Interactive signed rising WNBA stars as new talents to the existing roster and teamed up with them to showcase the passion they have for gaming. The WNBA stars signed through the PlayStation Playmakers program were:

  • Arike Ogunbowale
  • NaLyssa Smith
  • Zia Cooke

PlayStation Playmakers is not limited to athletes but also includes actors, artists, creators, entertainers, and gamers. It's a vibrant community of talent working in a collaborative manner with PlayStation to give fans early looks and behind-the-scenes access.

UEFA Women's Football

This is not the first time that PlayStation partnered with women athletes. Back in March 2023, PlayStation entered into a partnership with UEFA Women's Football which is expected to last until 2025.

This agreement actually expands an original partnership that started with the UEFA Champions League in 1997. This new three-season deal has PlayStation sponsor:

  • UEFA Women's Champions League
  • UEFA Women's EURO 2025
  • UEFA European Women's Under-19 and Under-17 Championships
  • UEFA Women's Futsal EURO
  • UEFA's Together #WePlayStrong initiative

What do you think? Which group should PlayStation partner with next?
