New rumors regarding the PlayStation 6 console bring good news to the more old-school fans as it is reportedly getting a detachable disc drive. It is being rumored that it will be sold separately when the new gaming machine launches in the future.

PlayStation 6 Rumors: Detachable Disc Drive

According to the latest report by Insider Gaming, Sony plans for the PlayStation 6 console to be an all-digital device, but there will be an optional detachable disc drive for those who want it.

The latest rumor claims that Sony will not make two versions of the PS6 the way it did with the PS5.

However, the only difference now is that players will still get a chance to opt for a console that can still read discs, and this is done through attaching an accessory that would be sold separately from the console.

The current iteration of the PlayStation 5 features the Standard and Digital versions of the console, with the standard one offering a built-in disc drive that can read physical games and play digital copies.

On the other hand, the Digital version is exclusively for digital game copies bought directly from the PlayStation store.

As of press time, Sony has yet to confirm this rumor regarding the PS6.

Physical Games for PS6 Will Still Be In Play

According to Digital Trends, this latest rumor seems plausible from Sony as the trend among gaming platforms now centers on all-digital gaming experiences as physical titles get phased out.

As previously mentioned, it has not been confirmed if Sony is actually making this move, but if so, it could change the gaming landscape and have various developers or publishers opting for all-digital releases of their titles.

It could also mean that the few who release physical copies could charge users more because of its manufacturing, packaging, and distribution extra cost compared to going digital.

However, Sony opting to offer a detachable disc drive could also guarantee that physical games would continue to be available in the industry, especially as there are many who still prefer this.
