A new update for The Oregon Trail has been released, integrating Apple’s Health App through the release of The Oregon Trail: StepTracker Apple Watch app. With the theme of “The Oregon Trail – In Real Life,” players can now use their Apple Watch or iPhone and enjoy a more tangible experience of the game’s actual steps.

There’s no doubt that this is a first-of-its-kind experience; all players need to do is load The Oregon Trail on Apple Arcade and transform their daily walks and runs into a digital westward journey. The Oregon Trail: StepTracker app for Apple Watch allows players to set their own pace for walking, running, or even wheeling that best suits their daily routine.

However, it’s not just a simple step tracker for it has the following features:

  • Digital representations of real-world locations
  • Statistics and progress data
  • Daily summaries
  • Avatar customization
  • in-game rewards

Players, for example, can walk the 2,000 miles of the Oregon Trail, which has five journey legs, 64 locations, 15 river crossings, seven forts, and eight pony express stations. That means there's a lot for players to see and do as they journey along the trail. It’s also worth noting that the graphics of The Oregon Trail are at the front and center, letting players enjoy the animated environments as they journey from Independence to Oregon. For players able to walk about 10,000 steps per day, it should take at least one year to complete the journey.

In a statement, Gameloft Brisbane Game Manager David MacMinn revealed that by using Apple health, they have managed to branch out the original walking simulator from being a game to a method that players can follow with their own steps. He added that it’s a great way for people to understand those that actually made the journey while, at the same time, being able to improve their own health and fitness.

The Oregon Trail is a modern twist on the trails experienced by those who traveled to Oregon, and it's the official successor to the global phenomenon. It was the most-downloaded Apple Arcade game in 2021.
