Publisher Square Enix has just announced that they will be hosting a closed beta test for their upcoming mobile game NieR Re[in]carnation for iOS and Android devices soon. The closed beta is set to start on July 29 at 12:00 AM EST to August 4 at 11:59 PM EST. Registration is now available until July 26 at 10:59 AM EST. Square Enix is set to accept 20,000 applicants (10,000 users for iOS and 10,000 users for Android). If the registrations exceed 20,000, participants will be picked randomly through a lottery.

NieR Re[in]carnation is one of the projects that will be made to commemorate the 10th anniversary of the NieR series. It uses a free-to-play with a microtransaction model. Square Enix has also released a promotional trailer that runs for just under two minutes, showcasing snippets of gameplay that includes both 2D and 3D spaces, the in-game world, and some of the characters that players will be interacting with.

An overview of the story has been provided by the publisher. It is still a bit vague but it reads: “A girl wakes up on a cold stone floor. A vast space with rows of towering structures. Guided by a mysterious creature that calls itself “Mama,” the girl begins to walk atop the stone pavement. To reclaim what she lost, and to atone for her sins. Inside a “Cage” built in some unfathomable way by who knows who.”

Three characters have been introduced so far, namely the protagonist “Girl in White”, a mysterious ghost-like creature called “Mama” and the “Dark Monster”. A number of screenshots have also been unveiled by Square Enix and it is undeniable that the whole aesthetic of the game shouts NieR. The level of detail in the stills is also impressive once you consider that this is a game that will be played and viewed on screens no larger than the biggest iPad Screen.

NieR Re[in]carnation is set to launch for Android and iOS devices. The closed beta test registration is currently open. Those who want a chance at trying it out can do so by checking out this link.
