According to Reuters, Ubisoft CEO Yves Guillemot has revealed the game publisher is in negotiations with Netflix for a new series.

Are we looking at a new direction of videogame adaptations? Without having much to go on, we can only expect the negotiations will involve an adaptation of one of Ubisoft’s franchise games. Michael Fassbender’s Assassin’s Creed movie arrives in theaters on Dec. 21 and, depending on the ratings, I’d love to see a continuation in a series on Netflix. Watch Dogs 2 could also be a viable option and feature a Mr. Robot-esque world.

Past failures of video game adaptations have left most of us tainted. We all have different opinions and views on the matters of video game movie adaptation, but when was the last one that “wowed” you? As we know, Netflix is an online streaming behemoth that has made its name with some truly binge-worthy projects. I’d also like to consider Netflix to be the “cleaner” of everything that has gone wrong with movies and TV.

Finally, the Reuters article also reports Guillemot made it clear that he desires “to keep Ubisoft independent.” Vivendi, a French multinational mass media conglomerate, owns nearly 25 percent of Ubisoft shares. If Ubisoft wants to remain independent, branching out into series production or other diverse projects could be the right solution.
