Ed Boon has made it official that the next "Mortal Kombat" game is already in the works, marking a new age for the franchise.
This comes after the cancelation of the DLC for "Mortal Kombat 1."
Ed Boon Confirms New 'Mortal Kombat' Is In the Works
During an interview with Collider, Boon confirmed the NetherRealm's next direction, saying that "We are actively pursuing another 'Mortal Kombat' game. And we're definitely doing more as well."
Boon stopped himself from divulging further teasers regarding the next "Mortal Kombat" game, with the creator also not talking about what the sequel game would be called.
That said, GameRant said that Boon added several bits of information during the interview, saying that NetherRealm is "doing more" than "Mortal Kombat's" development.
This may be linked to a recent leak suggesting that "Injustice 3" is also being developed by NetherRealm Studios and WB Games.
'Mortal Kombat 1' Cancels DLC for Sequel
The announcement comes after a rough stretch for "Mortal Kombat 1." NetherRealm Studios confirmed that DLC characters and story content would no longer be released for the game, with the studio moving on to its next project.
Reports claimed that the next DLC for "Mortal Kombat 1" was likely canceled because of how the "Khaos Reigns" expansion performed poorly in the market and how it was not a hit among fans. It is speculated that had it sold better, plans for further content would likely have continued.
Despite the DLC's poor performance, "Mortal Kombat 1" was a well-received game and has exceeded expectations in terms of its market performance and reviews.
In related news, the sequel in its film franchise, "Mortal Kombat II," is coming to cinemas this weekend and is expected to help shine a brighter light on the games.
