Another game just got multiple platform crossplay features enabled, and to the surprise of no one, did not include the PlayStation 4.

Joining the small, yet popular, ranks of games like Epic Games’ Fortnite, Rocket League and Minecraft, Saber Interactive’s NBA 2K Playgrounds 2 now features multi-platform crossplay. This was posted on Twitter by the official account for the game, and is part of the huge update the NBA 2K Playgrounds 2 just received.

The update also introduces a court on Mars, which falls in line with the series' staple of absolutely ridiculous basketball. New vanity items were also introduced, such as brand-new outfits for existing players as well as court editor items. There’s also a pretty big roster update, so expect more of your favorite NBA stars as playable characters with comically large-sized heads.

The biggest takeaway, however, was the inclusion of multiple platform crossplay, something which very few games have managed to achieve. If you own NBA 2K Playgrounds 2 on either the Xbox One, PC or Nintendo Switch, then you can now play with other players on those different platforms. This is certainly something to be excited about, as friends who have the game on different consoles can now play with one another, despite the differing online services. This crossplay feature also comes at no additional charge, and is available for free.

Notably missing, of course, is the PlayStation 4. While the PS4 version of NBA 2K Playgrounds 2 includes all of the features in the update, you still cannot play with other platforms if you own it on Sony’s current-gen console. I fully expect this to be the norm until Sony grants another exception. Whether you agree with them or not, Sony has been adamant on its stance on cross-play for a while now, even when companies like Microsoft and Nintendo have been more than happy to cooperate on the issue.

Either way, it’s nice to see some love for crossplay, as I think more games and their developers and publishers should at least consider this feature for more interconnectivity between user of different platforms.
