A battle royale game based on anime is bound to happen, and this new one is based on My Hero Academia. During the Anime Expo 2022, Bandai Namco revealed its upcoming free-to-play online multiplayer battle royale game My Hero Ultra Rumble. The game is coming to PC, PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and Nintendo Switch.

While no release date is announced, there is a Closed Beta Test for PlayStation 4 divided into two phases:

  • Phase 1
    • Start: August 17 at 10:00 p.m. ET
    • End: August 18 at 6:00 a.m. ET
  • Phase 2
    • Start: August 18 at 10:00 p.m. ET
    • End: August 21 at 11:00 a.m. PT

To get an idea of the gameplay, you can watch the trailer below:

In the game, form a team of three and fight it out with seven other teams on expansive city-wide maps. Players can choose to play as heroes or villains. These include students like Izuku Midoriya, Shoto Todoroki, and Katsuki Bakugo, and professional heroes like All Might and Mt. Lady. While villains are playable, only a few were shown in the trailer.

Like in the anime, players can use Quirks with their characters to attack enemies. But it’s important to know that teamwork is key to winning matches. It’s not just fighting since players can contribute to the team's victory by rescuing or intimidating civilians. This can result in obtaining powerful items that can turn the tide of the fight.

In a statement, Bandai Namco Producer Aoba Miyazaki shared that the world of My Hero Academia has a colorful cast of heroes and villains, and when combined with Quirks, it provides a good setting for a battle royale experience that continues to be faithful to the series. She added that they are excited to share the gameplay through the first closed beta test.

My Hero Academia is set in a world where most of the population has gained superpowers known as Quirks. The story focuses on Izuku Midoriya, who dreams of becoming a superhero despite not having any powers himself.

What do you think? Is it a good addition to the battle royale genre?
