The battle royale train just keeps on chugging with developers putting their own unique twists and turns on the genre. The latest one is Spellbreak by developer Proletariat. Set to release in late 2020, the free-to-play magic-focused battle royale game will launch on the PlayStation 4, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch, and PC via the Epic Games Store.
In its description via the official PlayStation site, Spellbreak is “an epic fantasy action spellcasting game where players choose a class, weave spectacular spell combinations and fight other players to become an all-powerful battlemage” in the world of Hollow Lands. Players are able to utilize unique class skills and item effects to dominate their enemies, whether as a solo competitor or with your friends as a squad of magic wielders.
So far, we’ve been given clues to the classes we should expect once Spellbreak launches. It seems that the game’s class system will consist of six unique roles and are dependent upon the archetypal elements such as fire, lightning, ice, and more. It also looks like each specific class and spell may have unique ways of interacting with each other, whether it be to negate or amplify a specific spell’s effects. There are also runes and items which I assume will be lootable once on the battlefield.
Lastly, Spellbreak will also develop its own lore with its month to month Chapter System. This will provide players with a background on what the mysteries that lie within the Hollow Lands are. It’s definitely a bold move and one that I would like to see pay off, seeing that the only other battle royale title that actually works on their lore is Apex Legends, although it might be easier on their part as Apex is already coming from the beloved Titanfall series.
Spellbreak will launch for the PlayStation 4, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch, and PC via the Epic Games Store in late 2020. As of right now, Proletariat CEO Seth Sivak has also confirmed that the game will also be crossplay ready starting on day one to make sure that “Spellbreak will be accessible to as many people as possible.”
