"The Legend of Zelda" is rumored to be getting a new game right around the corner, and it is now being claimed that the new title will be revealed soon. However, it may not be what fans have been hoping for all this time.

Nintendo insider Nash Weedle recently posted something cryptic on X, writing "Hero, wake up, the drums are resounding for 2027." This was a quote-tweet of his own 2025 post that read: "Richard > Edward > Bernard."
According to ComicBook Gaming, "The Legend of Zelda" fans may recognize Richard and Edward as the codenames for the last two 2D "Zelda" games. "The Legend of Zelda: Link's Awakening Remake" was released 2019 and codenamed "Richard," while "The Legend of Zelda: Echoes of Wisdom" was released in 2024 and codenamed "Edward."
The report said that based on this cryptic post from the insider, the pattern suggests that "Bernard" points to a new 2D "The Legend of Zelda" game coming from Nintendo. However, it remains unknown if the mentioned timeline by the leaker points to the actual release of the game or just its possible announcement.
ComicBook Gaming said that if 2027 is the release date, then an official announcement may be coming real soon.
What to Expect from the Reported New 2D 'Zelda' Game?
The leak implied that the upcoming new "Zelda" game, expected to either arrive or be announced by 2027, is a two-dimensional game, and will not follow the 3D open-world design of the latest mainline titles, including "Breath of the Wild" and its sequel "Tears of the Kingdom."
The previous 2D "Zelda" games feature a five-year gap between each other, which may suggest that the next game may not arrive until 2029.
However, it is also possible that Nintendo may have ramped up its timeline for the 2D "Zelda" game's release by two years. For now, take this leak with a grain of salt, as there is still no official confirmation from Nintendo and its partner developers.
