Instagram To Roll Out Instant Translations For Posts And Bios

Instagram will roll out translations on the photo-sharing platform for text written in other languages. Users will soon see a “See Translation” button, which will convert text in captions, comments and profile bios.

“In the coming month, you’ll see a translation button on feed stories and profile bios written in languages different from your own,” wrote Instagram in a post. “The Instagram community has grown faster and become more global than we ever imagined. And we’re excited that you’ll soon be able to understand the full story of a moment, no matter what language you speak. To learn more about translation on Instagram, check out help.instagram.com.”

Instagram has not announced which languages will be up for translation but it is likely that translations will be offered for languages that the platform already supports. The 3.4.0 version of Instagram supports: Afrikaans/Afrikaans, Chinese/中文(繁體/简体), Czech/Český, Danish/Dansk, Dutch/Nederlands, Finnish/Suomi, French/Français, German/Deutsch, Greek/Ελληνικά, Indonesian/Bahasa Indonesia, Italian/Italiano, Japanese/日本語, Korean/한국어, Malay/Bahasa Melayu, Norwegian/Norsk, Polish/Polski, Portuguese/Português, Russian/Русский, Spanish/Español, Swedish/Svenska, Tagalog/Filipino, Thai/ภาษาไทย and Turkish/Türkçe.

The Facebook-owned platform revealed text will be “translated automatically based on the language they are written in.” If translations are not showing up, then either Instagram does not support translation for the language or the platform could not detect it.

The translations will be effective for future posts and may not show up for previously shared content. “Keep in mind that translations also may not show up for older posts and comments,” shares Instagram on its Help Center.

Earlier this week, Instagram announced a major new milestone: the app has over 500 million active users, with more than 80 percent of them living outside of the United States.
