Even the savviest of Facebook users often don’t know that Facebook has a second inbox where important or timely messages could be lurking. The inbox — called the “Other” folder — is akin to the Spam folder in your email.

It exists because Facebook attempted to filter messages from people that are not in your social network — a noble idea, in theory, since it means you don’t have to come across any creepy messages from randos and strangers. But the one caveat of this system is that people reaching out to you for other reasons (say, a distant family member, someone not comfortable enough to add you on Facebook, or a nice person from a bar) can often be overlooked.

To check out your second inbox, follow these easy steps:

1. Open your Facebook Messenger app.

2. On the bottom right corner (next to Recent, Calls, Groups, and People), select the Settings button.

3. Select “People” and then “Message Requests.” This will pull forth the most recent request.

4. To access more, click on “See filtered requests.” This will pull forth all the filtered requests Facebook has deemed to be spam.

For some users, the list could reveal genuine attempts from acquaintances or people. Or, if you’re anything like me, it’ll be strangers.
