Horizon Zero Dawn: The Frozen Wilds
Horizon Zero Dawn: The Frozen Wilds Sony / Guerrilla

Guerrilla Games is taking a page out of Team Ninja’s book and will release a new Horizon Zero Dawn Complete Edition this holiday season. But the implications of the announcement are kind of a bummer and we can’t help but wonder why Guerrilla doesn’t have more plans for Horizon Zero Dawn after the game’s first expansion debuts next month.

We were big fans of Horizon Zero Dawn when it debuted back in February, calling it “an excellent foundation for the next great PlayStation franchise.” HZD was a bit shorter than we’d hoped, but that tends to be the case with great games. We were ecstatic when Guerrilla announced Horizon ’s first expansion, The Frozen Wilds, during Sony’s E3 2017 presser. The turnaround time was so fast we assumed TFW would be the first of several Horizon Zero Dawn expansions, each revealing a bit more about the dilapidated world Aloy and the rest of humanity inherited. But the latest word from Sony and Guerrilla suggests our assumptions couldn’t have been much further from the truth. Three months removed after E3, and just under a month before The Frozen Wilds heads to PSN, a Complete Edition sounds like we aren’t going to see any new Horizon Zero Dawn content after November.

According to a Sony tweet, Horizon Zero Dawn: Complete Edition heads to North American retailers on Dec. 5. The updated physical release will include the base game, presumably with all of the updates, other changes introduced since launch day and The Frozen Wilds expansion. But there’s no word on any other content for the game. Complete Edition won’t be the equivalent of a Season Pass, but only the Horizon Zero Dawn game and The Frozen Wilds in physical form. The news certainly puts the ongoing lack of a HZD Season Pass in perspective. It’s a letdown for those who’ve grown accustomed to seeing multiple post-launch content releases for major open world games, or anyone who wanted to learn more about Aloy’s world. How could anyone who enjoyed Horizon Zero Dawn not be disappointed to learn we aren’t getting more expansions while we wait for the inevitable sequel?

For an early look at the Horizon Zero Dawn expansion heading to PSN this holiday season, check out the Frozen Wilds trailer that debuted at E3 2017. Then head down to the comments and let us know if you’re disappointed by the news that we may only get one batch of Horizon Zero Dawn DLC.

Horizon Zero Dawn is currently available on PS4. The game’s first expansion, The Frozen Wilds, debuts Nov. 7. Horizon Zero Dawn: Complete Edition hits stores Dec. 5.
