Say Your Goodbyes as Harry Potter: Wizards Unite is Closing Down

Not so good news.
Not so good news. Niantic

Bad news for all witches and wizards! Harry Potter: Wizards Unite is coming to an end. This December 6 the game will be removed from the App Store, Google Play, and Galaxy Store. It’s going to officially close on January 31 next year.

In a post, the Niantic team shared that when they launched the game, the goal was to let players experience the wizarding world in their real-world surroundings. Exciting as that was, the team went on to say that “not all games are meant to last forever.” While no actual reason was given, it’s safe to say that Harry Potter: Wizards Unite didn’t reach the level of success that Pokémon Go had or even the sustainability present in Ingress.

So what’s going to happen now? This week, several gameplay changes are introduced:

  • All Daily Assignments have their rewards increased.
  • All Potion Brew times are reduced by 50% with Master Notes.
  • The daily cap on sending and opening Gifts is removed.
  • Barrufio’s Brain Elixir potion now awards 3× player XP.
  • 1920s Portkey Portmanteaus appear on the map more frequently and associated Fragment rewards are doubled.
  • Spell Energy and Ingredients appear on the map more frequently.

From November and until the game shuts down, players can look forward to these events:

  • November
    • Dolores Umbridge Lethal Adversaries Event
    • Half-Blood Prince Brilliant Event Part 1
    • Lucius Malfoy Lethal Adversaries Event
    • Half-Blood Prince Brilliant Event Part 2
  • December
    • Bellatrix Lethal Adversaries Event
    • Horcrux Hunt Part 2
    • Voldemort Lethal Adversaries Event
    • Deathly Hallows Brilliant Event Part 1
    • Holiday Event
    • Deathly Hallows Brilliant Event Part 2

Things to Remember

While the game will be absent in different stores by December, it remains playable until the actual shutdown. So, all features and servers are up until January 31, 2021. Players who already have the game downloaded can keep playing until that date.

Another bad news is that there won’t be any refund for past purchases. The best way to go about it is to spend Gold and items before the big day arrives. The team did say that they’re going to make changes in the remaining months to let everyone enjoy everything.

So what do you think about this news?
