Guerilla Games' co-founder Arjan Brussee has recently revealed that he is working on a new game engine that would be Europe's answer to the hugely famous Unreal Engine, as well as other competitors.

It is widely known that while many gaming studios develop their own game engine, Epic Games' Unreal Engine is one of the most widely used in the world. Brussee wants to challenge that in the future.

Guerilla's Co-Founder Is Making a European Unreal Engine

Brussee outlined his latest career chapter during a May 2026 episode of the Dutch podcast "De Technoloog," revealing that he is working on a startup that will be behind a new graphics rendering engine called the "Immense Engine."

He described this as a fully European-built platform, and according to GameRant, the developer wants it to be a rival of similar technologies from the United States and China.

The core idea behind Immense appears to be as much about architecture as geography. Brussee said the technology is being designed with "full integration of AI," and he claims that the rise of this new category in the tech industry opens up a way to rethink foundational software, including game engines.

The Immense Engine will be different from traditional frameworks, which are best known for manual tool navigation, as it will use AI agents that will serve as modular components. In turn, this will make it easy to add new systems rather than reworking a single monolithic stack.

Brussee said the platform will be suitable for applications beyond gaming that require regional data compliance in Europe. He cited logistics and 3D simulations for defense agencies as potential markets.

Brussee's portfolio stands as an impressive testament to his work, with him starting his journey way back in the 1990s when he worked as a programmer on Epic's "Jazz Jackrabbit" platformer series.

He co-founded Guerilla Games in 2003 and spent nine years as executive producer and chief operating officer. Brussee also had a stint over at Epic Games in 2017, where he served in roles including being the head of mobile, director of product management, and technical director.
