Publisher Sold Out and developer Metamorphosis Games have just unveiled the debut trailer for their upcoming 2D platforming and action RPG Gestalt: Steam & Cinder. Along with its unveiling, the companies also announced that a demo for the game will be available for PC via Steam starting today, June 16, until June 22 as part of the Steam Game Festival: Summer Edition.

Gestalt: Steam & Cinder, inspired by "16 and 32-bit classics”, is Metamorphosis Games’ take on the 2D platforming genre, laden with an engrossing narrative set in a steampunk world. Players assume control of Aletheia, who will have to journey against the forces of evil to discover the secrets of the massive, steam-powered city of Canaan – the last bastion of mankind. Throughout her journey, she will encounter a number of unique characters that will either help or hurt her cause in the battle against the Comitium – the city’s corrupt overseers.

The gameplay of Gestalt employs your usual Metroidvania elements by combining tight platforming and action-filled combat within its retro aesthetic that is highly reminiscent of Mega Man Zero. Players have a combination of powerful melee attacks and ranged revolver attacks as their bread and butter to defeat the enemies littering Canaan’s districts. Defeating enemies allows players to level up Aletheia’s skills and earn new ones that provide her with more ways to traverse the world.

Video game news outlet Gamespot had the opportunity to play Gestalt: Steam & Cinder and has also recently just published a video that showcases 11 minutes of gameplay and snippets of boss fights with Einherjar and Eliza, giving those interested a sneak peek as to what they should expect from the game. The clip makes the game feel like it’s going to be very challenging to balance both platforming and fighting the enemies, but doesn’t force you to focus on both. For all we know, a week after it launches maybe there’ll already be a speedrunner who will coast through the game without taking damage or without killing enemies.

Gestalt: Steam & Cinder will launch for the PlayStation 4, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch, and PC via Steam in 2020.
