We finally get to see new gameplay footage of Marvel Ultimate Alliance 3: The Black Order, and if the video is anything to go by, Ultimate Alliance 3 is shaping up to be the best in the series.

The footage comes straight from Game Informer, who managed to snag seven minutes of gameplay featuring some newcomers to the Marvel Ultimate Alliance series. The roster for Marvel Ultimate Alliance 3: The Black Order will be heavily inspired by the Marvel Cinematic Universe, and largely features characters from the Avengers, Guardians of the Galaxy, and the Defenders. If you were a big fan of the inclusion of Marvel’s mutant family in the past games, though, there’s no need to worry, as it looks like the X-Men make a return for this title.

With that in mind, let’s check the footage shown and see how greatly things have changed from its predecessor, Marvel Ultimate Alliance 2, which came out back in 2009, a decade ago.

The footage starts off with the introduction of the Guardians of the Galaxy into the Marvel Ultimate Alliance universe. The team’s original roster comprised of Star Lord, Gamora, Drax the Destroyer, Rocket Raccoon and Groot will be the iteration used for this game. It is even uncanny how Rocket’s voice actor sounds a lot like Bradley Cooper, who voiced the character in the Guardians of the Galaxy series of films.

The Guardians, in the shown chapter of the game, encounter Nebula (who’s villainous again) aboard a Kree ship. The cutscene ends, and we are treated to how the combat in game looks. Marvel Ultimate Alliance 3: The Black Order, like its predecessors, can be played either solo with AI teammates or with three other people, making for a great couch co-op experience. There’s five members of the Guardians though, so the work around was to combine Rocket and Groot into one character, which is fair, I suppose.

The graphics and animations look largely overhauled, and there’s a lot more enemies present on the screen now compared to its predecessors. There’s a lot more characters introduced into the gameplay footage, as well as new chapters, so be sure to watch the clip in order to get a closer look. If there’s one thing I noted it’s that Scarlet Witch’s character remains faithful to her comic book counterpart, as opposed to Elizabeth Olsen’s portrayal in the Avengers movies.

Marvel Ultimate Alliance 3: The Black Order is set to be released on July 19, 2019, exclusively for the Nintendo Switch.
