‘Game Of Thrones’ Season 6 Spoilers: The Six Biggest Questions The Season Must Answer

Game of Thrones season 6 is premiering on April 24, and it’s going to be a momentous one—this is the first season of the show that passes the books in A Song of Ice and Fire. This is the season that starts revealing a narrative known thus far to almost no one. And, whether you choose to watch the season or not, that’s big news—even if the show’s choices differ substantially from the books. Game of Thrones season 6 will address major issues in Westeros. These are the biggest of them.

The Biggest Questions In Game Of Thrones Season 6

Will Jon Snow Come Back To Life?

The most obvious question in Game of Thrones season 6, of course, is whether Jon Snow will come back to life. We’ve theorized, based on evidence from the book, the show, and the show’s marketing, that this is extremely likely. But that doesn’t mean it will happen right away, or the way we expect it. Will Jon Snow spend most of the season trapped inside his direwolf Ghost? Or will Melisandre bring him back early in the season? It’s not the most interesting question in the season, but it’s certainly the highest-profile one, and the answer will tell us a lot about what to expect from the rest of the series.

What Will Jon Snow Do Once He Knows His Heritage?

Let’s say Jon Snow does come back to life and that, by the end of the season, he’s alive, back in his own body, and possibly even aware of his true parentage. Jon Snow’s death will release him from his Night’s Watch vows, so he’s free to leave the Wall after his resurrection if he so chooses. What choices will Jon Snow make? Will he head south to save the remnants of the Stark family, as he wanted to do before his death? Will he march south to join Daenerys and become the second head of the dragon? Or will he stay with the Watch that rejected him, and try to lead them in the coming onslaught of the White Walkers?

Will Queen Cersei Lose Her Trial?

Queen Cersei’s life is on the line. Her walk of shame didn’t get her out of trouble—she still needs to go on trial for her sins of adultery, thanks to the power of the Faith that she enabled. And if she loses, they’ll kill her. It’s as simple as that. Her champion is Ser Robert Strong, née Gregor Clegane, who has laid waste to all who come against him. Will the champion of The Faith be The Hound? It seems pretty likely. Will he win? That’s another question entirely… and one that much of the future of Lannister rule will rest upon.

Will King Tommen Die?

At the end of Game of Thrones season 5, Princess Myrcella kicked the bucket. That event has been prophesized in the A Song of Ice and Fire books, but hasn’t actually happened yet. That same prophecy foretells that all of Cersei’s children will die before her, and Maggy the Frog is two for three so far. If Tommen dies, Lannister rule in King’s Landing is at an end. The entire Lannister line may end. And that leads us to one of the two biggest questions in A Game of Thrones season 6….

Will Daenerys Return To Westeros?

Daenerys has a khalasar again… and a very shaky hold on Meereen. She has even discovered her inner ruthlessness. She has learned the lessons she needs to learn from Slaver’s Bay—that she can’t please everyone. That peace isn’t always the answer. That violence works. And that justice is in the eye of the beholder.

With this knowledge, Daenerys is ready to return to Westeros— and probably wreak havoc. The question is, how long will it take her to get there—and will there be a king left when she does? With Myrcella, Stannis and Shireen dead, Tommen’s closest heir in the show is… Daenerys herself. And that does not bode well for the Lannisters.

Will Daenerys come to restore order to a chaotic kingdom? Or will she bring greater destruction than ever?

Will The Wall Fall?

The most important question in Game of Thrones season 6 has nothing to do with southern politics. It has to do with the Wall, and what lies north of it. The Night’s King has begun his war. The forces of the dead are marching on the living, and few beyond the wildlings and the Night’s Watch know it yet. Westeros is as disunited as ever. But the White Walkers aren’t going to wait for Daenerys to unite the Seven Kingdoms in fire and blood. They’ll march south. And only the Wall can stop them.

But the Wall cannot stand forever. Sooner or later, it has to fall.

We’ll have to wait for Game of Thrones season 6 to find out how that happens.
