Details on the The Flash’s upcoming Gorilla City episodes have been circling around for weeks, but now The CW has announced the arc as a two-episode event. As Cisco puts it, “Speedster vs. Super Gorilla: Best worst video game ever.”

At the end of The Flash Season 3 episode 12, “Untouchable,” Jesse Quick arrives from Earth-2 through a breach and tells Wally her father, Harrison Wells, has been kidnapped by Gorilla Grodd. But why would Grodd want Wells? To understand, we’ll have to revisit the events of The Flash Seasons 1 & 2.

Possible The Flash Season 3 spoilers ahead!

Grodd’s relationship with Wells stems all the way back to The Flash Season 1 when Grodd was just a normal Gorilla living in STAR Labs. He was set to be used in gene therapy and psychic experiments by Eobard Thawne (disguised as Harrison Wells) and General Wade Eiling. However, after the particle accelerator explosion, Grodd gained those telepathic abilities. Grodd then began to work with Thawne, who saved him from Eilings inhumane experiments. Grodd lived in the Central City sewers to help Thawne, who by this time had revealed himself as the Reverse Flash. Season 1 ends with Grodd still alive, becoming smarter as each day goes on.

He reappears in Season 2 after the Reverse-Flash is dealt with and the team has Earth-2 Harrison ‘Harry’ Wells. Grodd came back to find a way to create more sentient Gorilla’s, like himself. After Grodd captures Caitlin to help him with his mission, Harry dresses up as the Reverse-Flash to distract him so Barry can save Caitlin. The team eventually lures Grodd into an interdimensional breach to Earth-2 Gorilla City.

So Grodd has a ton of reasons to kidnap Wells. While the Eobard Thawne version is certainly the worst, Earth-2 Wells is responsible for sending Grodd to Gorilla City. But since Grodd wanted to be in a place with more Gorilla’s of his kind, you have to wonder what his intentions really are. The episode 13 synopsis reveals Grodd may actually be an ally to Team Flash this time around because Gorilla City’s leader, Solivar, wants to invade Earth-1.

In the comics, Gorilla City is a power-hungry place far more technologically advanced than humans. There is one good guy, Solivar, a peaceful and wise leader of Gorilla City, who is also one of Grodd’s main adversaries. It seems those roles will be reversed on The Flash.

Even though Grodd was kind of Reverse-Flash’s minion in Season 1, he thought of Thawne as a father and was thankful he was saved from Eiling’s experiments. He also showed compassion to Caitlin, as she befriended him and would often visit him in his cell. Since Grodd did want to create more Gorilla’s like himself, his real agenda to save Gorilla City makes more sense. He could have sought out Wells for help.

How Team Flash plans on handling an entire civilization of Gorilla’s should be quite entertaining. H.R. Wells has said there are many sentient Gorilla’s where he's from, Earth-19, including one named Gorilla Grodd. Hopefully he has some bright ideas for once.

Check out the synopsis and promo below.

When Jesse Quick informs the team that her father has been abducted, Barry, Caitlin, Cisco and Julian voyage to Earth-2 on a rescue mission to save Harry from Gorilla City. As they trek through the forest, Barry and the team are immediately captured and brought to Grodd. Grodd tells them he needs their help to stop Solovar, the leader of Gorilla City, as Solovar wants to invade Earth-1. Meanwhile, back on Earth-1, Jesse and Kid Flash hit the streets to stop a metahuman that can control gravity, with H.R. and Joe guiding them from S.T.A.R. Labs.

What do you think Grodd plans to do with Harry Wells? The fact Grodd captures Team Flash only to ask for help is a bit suspicous. Let us know in the comments.
