As confirmed by publisher Square Enix to another publication, the Final Fantasy X series of games has now reached 20.8 million units sold across multiple platforms. This is a monumental milestone with Final Fantasy X a marked departure for then-developer Square as it deviated from the series' old art design into what will evolve into its staple to this day.

With this, Final Fantasy X and its series of games have become one of the most successful in the franchise, third only to Final Fantasy XIV (accounting for its subscription sales) and Final Fantasy VII and its subsequent re-releases. The Final Fantasy X series of games consist of the former and a direct sequel, Final Fantasy X-2, making the game the first in franchise history to have a direct follow-up.

Square Enix last posted numbers for Final Fantasy X in 2013, where the publisher confirmed over 14 million copies for the two titles. It’s worth noting that this was before the release of a special collection called Final Fantasy X/X-2 HD Remaster, which bundled both games and remastered many aspects for newer audiences. Since then, it would appear that this collection contributed another over 6 million units for the series.

Final Fantasy X was first released in 2001 on PlayStation 2 before the merger between SquareSoft and Enix Corporation. Developed by Square, Final Fantasy X is known as the great shift for the series as a whole; it features fully 3D areas as opposed to pre-rendered backdrops and the first Final Fantasy game to feature voice acting. The game was directed by longtime series head Yoshinori Kitase, who put the Final Fantasy brand into mainstream consciousness with Final Fantasy VII.

Final Fantasy X’s popularity led to a direct sequel, Final Fantasy X-2. Both games tell the story of Tidus and Yuna, two star-crossed lovers who met following the former’s transportation to the other world of Spira. Outside of the two games, both characters have been universally praised and often appear in the Final Fantasy spinoff titles and rank high among fan favorites in the series.
