The supposed single-player action RPG game "Black Panther" from Electronic Arts has been canceled. EA has shared the news to its employees via an email announcement saying that the project has been scrapped.
Alongside this, the game development studio that has been established for the sole purpose of working on "Black Panther" has also been shut down.
There are three games that EA and Marvel have partnered to create in 2022, with all centering on a single-story standalone game for specific heroes, including this canceled "Black Panther" game.
EA Cancels 'Black Panther' Game
According to the latest report by IGN, Electronic Arts has sent an email announcement to its employees that confirms the cancelation of the "Black Panther" game that they are co-developing with Marvel Games. The project was announced around three years ago, centering on a massive collaboration with the comic book company's games division to bring three titles featuring its superheroes.
However, over the years, these games that Electronic Arts are developing did not share any updates regarding their developments, although the company recently confirmed that "Iron Man" is still in production. The same cannot be said for "Black Panther" as the game did not get any update from Electronic Arts or Cliffhanger Games whatsoever since it was announced years ago.
"Black Panther" was supposed to feature an original narrative developed by EA and Marvel Games based on the titular character and superhero.
As of writing, the company did not reveal why it was canceled almost three years into its development. "Black Panther" was supposed to be a standalone feature that would tell the story of T'Challa and his rise to power over the Kingdom of Wakanda, the fictional country known for its rich source of vibranium.
Cliffhanger Games Also Shut Down
Alongside this, EA has also subsequently announced that "Black Panther's" developer, Cliffhanger Games, is also shutting down, with the company dissolving the games studio for unknown reasons as well. This was led by the same studio head that helmed the development of "Middle-earth: Shadow of Mordor," Kevin Stephens, whose Monolith Productions was also dissolved.
It was revealed by IGN that EA recently announced a round of layoffs within its company that affected different aspects of its business. Moreover, this also came alongside the previous announcement of EA's return-to-office mandate among employees.
The recent layoffs reportedly impacted as much as 300 to 400 jobs within the companies, with employees axed from their positions.
For now, only the "Iron Man" game from EA's Motive Studio and another unannounced action game under the Marvel partnership remain. There are no announcements yet, as of writing, if "Iron Man" would also be canceled.
