Destiny 2 Won't Play Nice With Screen Capture Software At Certain Resolutions

PC gamers looking forward to this month’s Destiny 2 beta got a bit of bad news this week, as did many of those planning to use the game for content creation at/after launch. But the latest word on game capture software isn’t quite as bad as it might sound.

On Thursday, Bungie confirmed plans to begin the Destiny 2 PC beta on Aug. 28. We’ve known for some time now that PC gamers would get their own testing window, weeks after the console betas we saw in late July. But now we finally have an exact timeline for Battle.net users’ early hands-on window. The content featured in the PC beta should be identical to what we see on consoles. But we also wouldn’t be surprised to see a bit of additional tuning in the PC version, based on early feedback (like the Power Ammo complaints) during the PS4 and Xbox One beta.

The bad news, for some, is that certain display settings will apparently interfere with several third-party applications that have become very popular with PC gamers. Bungie says two of the most popular streaming and game capture applications, Open Broadcast Software (OBS) and Xsplit, will only work when playing Destiny 2 in Windowed mode. Neither will be able to capture properly while the game is running in Exclusive Fullscreen. The only way to capture footage without sacrificing resolution is to rely on external hardware, like capture cards/devices from Elgato or AVerMedia.

Capturing footage isn’t the only task that will be impacted by Bungie’s attempts to keep Destiny 2 safe from outside code. The studio says players will need to disable any third-party overlays associated with their preferred communications software, like Discord’s onscreen notifications to let you know who’s currently speaking. Frame-rate monitoring software also won’t work with Destiny 2, regardless of whether you’re playing in Exclusive Fullscreen or Windowed mode.

Destiny 2 is in development for PlayStation 4, Xbox One and PC. The game hits consoles on Sept. 6 before making the jump to PC in late October.
