The Dead Rising 4 campaign doesn’t include multiplayer support, the game’s producer revealed on Tuesday, making this the first Dead Rising campaign that hasn’t supported cooperative play since the first game in the series. Dead Rising 4 will still include a cooperative multiplayer mode. But it seems unlikely the new offering will convince as many people to buy Dead Rising 4.

The latest word on Dead Rising 4 comes via producer David McAnerin, one of several Capcom Vancouver employees who took over the ExpertZone_Community stream on Tuesday night. The studio took questions from Dead Rising fans, while playing a demo of the next game in the series, and it was during that Q&A session that McAnerin shocked fans with the news about the lack of co-op support in the Dead Rising 4 campaign.

The game will still include a multiplayer mode. Dead Rising 4 won’t allow players to complete the campaign together; however, it will include an online mode that McAnerin says will be comparable to the Infinity Mode from the first Dead Rising. The game’s producer says we’ll get “a little more backstory” from the multiplayer action in Dead Rising 4, but it sounds like the mode will prioritize mayhem over storytelling. It’ll also feature some familiar faces from the DR4 campaign.

“You play as four survivors who are also featured in the story,” McAnerin said. “You start in a safe house; you get a load up, get some weapons, get yourself ready to go; we unlock the doors, it’s killing, mayhem, madness [and] lots of interesting missions…You have to get to the safe house to survive the end of the day.”
