The action-adventure RPG Ashen will soon make its way to the PlayStation 4 and PC via Steam and GOG. Originally released exclusively for the Xbox One and PC via the Epic Games Store in 2018, publisher Annapurna Interactive and developer Aurora44 announced that the game will launch for the aforementioned platforms and marketplaces on December 9, 2019.

For those who do not own an Xbox One, did not want to buy it on the Epic Games Store, or just haven’t heard about it, Ashen is an open world co-op action RPG about a wanderer looking for a place to call home. Labeling itself as “Souls with a Twist”, the game employs stamina-based combat, an open world that players can explore on their own, and online multiplayer where players can either collaborate with strangers, invite them to your own party, or just simply ignore and part ways with them.

Ashen’s story revolves around an Ancient World that was once shrouded in darkness for a thousand years. It is now the player’s task to protect the light that is now covering the fantasy world.

The game puts an emphasis on relationships, where players get to meet people in Ashen’s vast world. Maybe you will come across a tinker, huntress, fortune-hunter, or weaver of shadows. Each character has unique knowledge and crafting abilities that bolster your chances of survival and victory. Also, in contrast to one of its biggest inspirations (the Souls franchise), Ashen emphasizes collaboration and cooperation to conquer the game itself instead of random encounters that could potentially mean life or death.

Aside from the lax approach to story progression and vast open world to discover, the NPCs players meet through the world of Ashen will also be added to your settlement where they will make their permanent home. As their quests are completed, certain services are provided that improve the player’s chances at succeeding on their journey.

Currently, Ashen holds an 82 and 78 Metacritic score for the PC and Xbox One, respectively. For those interested in a new take on a Souls-like experience and missed its initial release, Ashen is currently available for Wishlisting on Steam and will become available on Steam, GOG, and PlayStation 4 on December 9.
