In the ongoing trend of 2016 being the worst year anyone can remember, Ron Glass beloved actor in Joss Whedon’s Firefly , dies at 71. No other information has been released at this time.
Glass got his start with countless guests spots on shows in the early 70s, starting with All In The Family . His break came a few years later in 1975 when he was cast as Detective Ron Harris on the comedy Barney Miller . Glass was a series regular and appeared in 164 episodes.
But I and many fellow browncoats will always remember him as Shepherd Book. Heavily featured in both the ill-fated Firefly and the follow up movie Serenity , Glass’ character acted as a point of wisdom and light in the show, and provided a much needed moral compass for the crew of Serenity. His desire for a spiritual life was something that extended beyond the character. Glass was a leader in the California Buddhist Community, and a member of Sokka Gakai International, a lay Buddhist organization.
