Unfortunately, it was Sasha’s time to go in The Walking Dead Season 7 finale. She took the suicide pill Eugene gave her on the way to Alexandria. Negan didn’t know what Sasha had planned. Sasha sacrificed herself in hopes that her walker form would kill Negan. While walker Sasha didn’t kill Negan, she did give Alexandria the much need win.

Sonequa Martin-Green, who plays Sasha on the show, revealed to Entertainment Weekly how she found out about her character’s fate. Martin-Green knew it was her time well before she read The Walking Dead Season 7 episode 16 script. She was happy to see how Sasha’s story ended.

“[Showrunner Scott M. Gimple] let me know that it had been in the works for a really long time, that it was the way the story was going to go, and it had been a longstanding vision of his. And so then he gave me insight into how it was gonna happen,” Martin-Green told EW. “The coffin, and walker, and suicide pill of it all didn’t come until a little bit later. But what he did tell me ahead of time was that it was going to be sacrificial in a sense, and that it was gonna be very heroic in a sense. So I knew it was gonna be great, and when I actually saw it, the day I read the script, I cried, because it was just so powerful. I was so grateful for it.”

Saying goodbye to Sasha was bittersweet. The way her character died was one of the best in the show’s history. She died on her terms, which is not something that a lot of characters get. Sasha gave Alexandria a chance to fight another day. That’s the most selfless thing she could’ve done.
