The Walking Dead Season 7 Episode 13 may’ve given us a big clue as to where people’s loyalties lie in the war to come.

[WARNING: The Walking Dead Season 7 spoilers ahead. If you’re not caught up, stop reading now.]

You may’ve missed it or overlooked it, but remember the Kingdom’s second encounter with the Saviors in the last episode of The Walking Dead Season 7 ? It was after Ben was shot to teach King Ezekiel not to arrive with less than the agreed offering. Gavin, the leader of this group of Saviors, asked Ezekiel about Ben. Ezekiel’s crew says nothing. Gavin realizes the silence means Ben is dead.

Gavin becomes angry at the man who shot Ben. He orders him to leave immediately, without saying a word to anyone. Gavin threatens to kill the guy if he even thinks about disobeying him. It’s in that moment you can tell Gavin has a sense of respect for Ezekiel. Gavin didn’t want to kill Ben, just injure him. This is extremely telling of his character.

Shortly after the idiot who killed Ben leaves, Richard goes up to Gavin and tries to give the speech he prepared. Before he can finish his first sentence, Morgan attacks Richard and chokes him to death in front of everyone. Morgan tells everyone it was Richard who stole the King’s offering to the Saviors. He adds that it was Richard who wanted to instigate a fight and they wanted no part in it. Gavin looks on and acknowledges the Kingdom’s desire for peace.

It doesn’t look like Gavin really wants to be with the Saviors. He’s just in a position of power and has accepted life could be much worse for him if Negan didn’t give him this job. This makes us wonder… could Gavin be the turncoat for The Kingdom? In the comics, it’s Dwight who’s the mole in the Kingdom’s camp. But why can’t there be two? It seems like Dwight would be more inclined to trust Rick at Alexandria than he would Ezekiel, at least in the show Gavin will learn about the war and he might feel inclined to leave the Saviors and fight with Ezekiel.

We may be reading a bit too much into Gavin’s demeanor, but it would be an interesting layer to have in the Kingdom’s camp. Do you think there’s something deeper going on with Gavin? Let us know in the comments below. The Walking Dead Season 7 airs Sundays at 9 p.m. on AMC.
