Eugene made a bold move towards the end of The Walking Dead Season 7 episode 14. You probably weren’t expecting it, but don’t worry just yet. The reason behind Eugene’s odd actions might be a noble one.

Josh McDermitt, who plays Eugene on The Walking Dead , explained to ComicBook.com why his character didn’t leave with Rosita. If you missed the episode, Rosita killed one of Negan’s men that was escorting Eugene outside. The gunshot scared Eugene, which forced Rosita to take a second to convince him to go back with her.

Eugene refused to leave.

Yes, it was shocking that he decided to stay in Negan’s compound. However, Eugene might have bigger plans in the Sanctuary.

"I think if Eugene is gonna do anything, he wants to do it on his terms," McDermitt said. "I also think he's comfortable living there. He's scared all the time and a big source of that fear is coming from Negan so if he were to leave he would be just as scared because Negan's gonna come after him. I don't think he wants to leave. I don't think he wants Negan to hurt anyone. I don't think he wants his friends to get hurt but if he can live in the Sanctuary and just live in peace, he's gonna take that over anything."

Eugene knows Negan will hunt him down until he finds him. Eugene would live in constant fear, more so than what he was dealing with in Alexandria. Eugene was never loyal to Rick; he latched onto the group because that’s what he needed to do to survive. Eugene knows someone will get hurt if he leaves, and he can’t carry that guilt.

Unlike bloodthirsty Rosita, Eugene is thinking about the others back in Alexandria. He won’t risk hurting them or losing his life because he was impulsive.
