Publisher Dotemu and developer Tribute Games celebrated a huge milestone today for what could possibly be one of their most successful games this year. Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Shredder’s Revenge just passed 1 million units sold in its first week of release. The retro beat-em-up is a nostalgia-filled throwback to the original 80s cartoons and was first released on PlayStation 4, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch, and PC via Steam on June 16. A month after the launch, the game is expected to sit at even higher numbers now, and Dotemu CEO Cyrille Imbert had this to say about the game’s roaring success:

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Shredder’s Revenge is the game I dreamed of working on ever since I began watching the original cartoon and funneling coins into the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles arcade cabinets as a kid. We are immensely grateful to Nickelodeon for the opportunity to honor an era of Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles that profoundly impacted the lives of everyone at Dotemu, and to our friends at Tribute Games for expertly capturing the classic thrill of the Turtles’ battles with the Foot Clan in a new experience that feels completely fresh and exciting to play.

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Shredder’s Revenge is a retro arcade beat-em-up in the same vein as the most memorable entries in the Turtles’ series of games, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Turtles in Time. It features the Turtles: Leonardo, Raphael, Donatello, and Michelangelo, their human collaborators April O’Neil and Casey Jones, and their rodent adoptive father and sensei Master Splinter as playable characters. The game can be played with up to six players simultaneously for unrivaled beat-em-up sessions.

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Shredder’s Revenge is not Dotemu’s first successful re-entry to the beat-em-up genre. In 2020, the publisher released Streets of Rage 4, the long-awaited next entry to the iconic franchise. Its success led to Dotemu exploring other neglected beat-em-up franchises, leading to the development and eventual success of Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Shredder’s Revenge.

The Turtles will return to video games with Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: The Cowabunga Collection later this year on Switch, PlayStation, PC, and Xbox consoles. It’s a collection of the classic TMNT beat-em-ups from the 80s and 90s, featuring 13 select games from the series.
