PlayStation Neo Announced Alongside PlayStation Slim Next Month

The PlayStation Neo isn't going to be the only new Sony console announced soon Sony

While we’ve heard plenty of rumors about the PlayStation Neo, an upgraded PS4 that should be announced at an upcoming Sony event, we’re just now hearing information on a new PS4 console, being called the PS4 Slim.

Update: The video below has been taken down.

This new console, as confirmed by The Wall Street Journal and Eurogamer, appears to be a simple redesign of the original PS4. This console will most likely act more like the Xbox One S, a slight improvement aimed at getting new customers and upgrades from existing customers.

This means the PlayStation Neo is more likely going to be on par with the Xbox Scorpio. The Scorpio has been touted as the most powerful console that’s been formally announced, with massive improvements to processing power and graphics upgrades. The Neo is sure to follow suit, but we’ll see who ends up with the better tech specs after all is said and done.

As for release times, it wouldn’t be too surprising to see Sony announce a schedule similar to Microsoft’s console releases. That means we’ll be seeing the PS4 Slim available in late September or early October, and the PS4 Neo coming somewhere in 2017. We had heard rumors of a new PlayStation console coming in October, and assumed it would be the Neo. Looks like there is a console coming, just one we weren’t expecting.

While the PS4 Slim certainly looks confirmed, especially in the Eurogamer video above, and the Neo has been confirmed by Sony, everything else is still speculation at this point. For release times, prices and everything else, we’ll just have to wait for whatever Sony announces at the PlayStation Meeting on Sept. 7.

So what do you think? Are you interested in getting a PS4 Slim? Are you more excited about the prospects for the Neo? Let us know your thoughts in the comments section below.
