House of Cards season 3 didn’t suck, exactly, but the Netflix hit’s third season did not reach the heights of the prior two. Or at least it reached different heights, because the third season was a different kind of show. But the show’s creator and executive producer Beau Willimon knows that a lot of people felt that way, and he’s going to make some changes for House of Cards season 4.

House of Cards Season 4 Release Date: It Isn’t Going To Be Next February, That’s For Sure

To me, House of Cards season 3 was a misstep. The show switched from being some happy medium between Scandal and The West Wing to… well, mostly just The West Wing. I legitimately enjoyed the exploration of Claire and Frank’s relationship, even as I didn’t always understand either of their perspectives perfectly, but the show lacked the oomph of intrigue that made the first two seasons so great.

Willimon knows what we think about House of Cards season 3, but he doesn’t particularly agree with it. In a recent interview with E Online, the showrunner and head writer said that he likes that season 3 focused so heavily on the First Couple’s relationship, and didn’t have any big political wins for them. Still, he’s interested in what we have to say: "We don't want to pander or cater an upcoming season based purely on fan responses. But I am interested in what they have to say and I think it's great we can talk to each other."

Does that mean that House of Cards season 4 predictions should assume a greater level of intrigue? Not necessarily, although the season will be about the 2016 presidential election, which offers plenty of room for intrigue. The key point is, the House of Cards team knows that a lot of people weren’t totally satisfied. They liked it, but maybe they’ll be willing to find a happy medium between intrigue and personal drama. I sure hope so, anyway.
