It’s not much of a Game of Thrones season 5 spoiler to guess that Arya Stark is going to kill Ser Meryn Trant this season. After all, she’s been jonesing to for ages and, in a departure from the books, the Kingsguard member is coming right her way, straight to Braavos. And Arya has got to kill somebody soon. Meryn is dead meat. But what about Mace Tyrell?

Will Arya Stark Give The Gift To Both Meryn Trant And Mace Tyrell?

Queen Cersei sent Lord Mace Tyrell off to Braavos on a very important mission: Get out of her hair. Ostensibly, he’s being sent to deal with the Iron Bank, which won’t go well, but the real point of the trip is to further alienate Margaery and get as many Tyrells out of the court as possible. She may also want Meryn Trant to simply bump off Mace Tyrell—Trant is a murderous thug, after all—but I doubt he’ll get the chance.

Neither character goes to Braavos in the books, and that means the change has significance. In the books, Mace goes off to Storm’s End to liberate the castle from Stannis, who improbably enough still holds it. Sending him to Braavos, where Arya is, means we will see him again over there.

It’s a damn near sure thing that Arya will kill Meryn Trant—I suspect it will happen in the next episode after this week’s, “The Gift,” which probably alludes to both the gift to the wildlings and the gift of the House of Black & White. He is on her kill list, always has been. In the books, she kills a Night’s Watch deserter named Dareon, who is traveling with Sam. Changing that death to Meryn makes sense for the show, which is trying to reduce the overall number of characters compared to the books.

So is Mace Tyrell vulnerable? On the one hand, Arya has no reason to kill him, except loosely in that he’s an ally of the hated Queen Cersei. Trant may have orders to kill Mace, though. In fact, combine those two data points and you get a reasonable compromise: Arya will see Ser Meryn preparing to kill Mace, and will kill Meryn instead, for vengeance. She doesn’t care about Mace, but she may save his life by happenstance.

Yup, that’s my call. One thing’s for sure: Meryn Trant is dead meat. Hooray for Arya! Her vengeance is just beginning.
