Super Smash Bros DLC is in a state of flux. Mewtwo has already dropped. Lucas isn’t far off. And the great Nintendo poll of fighters has opened up the DLC roster to essentially anyone, anyone at all—even non-Nintendo characters like Banjo-Kazooie. Oh, and we know there are a few more character slots left to be had. Well, guess what: Whether you like it or not, one of ‘em is going to go to an Inkling, a character from Splatoon.

Super Smash Bros Splatoon DLC: Absolutely Going To Happen

Don’t get started with your hemming and hawing, reader: I know there’s already some basic Splatoon DLC that will bring costumes and other stupid crap like that to Super Smash Bros. That’s not what I’m talking about. I mean characters, bay-bee. And face it: It’s gonna happen.

Splatoon is Nintendo’s biggest IP launch since probably Wii Fit or Wii Sports, back in the mid-aughts. And Nintendo knows its fans bank on familiarity, so it’s making as big a push with Splatoon as possible. The company is releasing a Splatoon Wii U bundle, an unprecedented move for a new IP (When was the last Nintendo bundle with a new IP? I actually can’t find one, unless you count Wii Sports). They’re doing a whole slew of Splatoon Amiibos. They’re doing demos and stress tests and even actual TV commercials. It’s a big push.

Super Smash Bros has always been, among many other things, a launching pad for Nintendo IP… a marketing platform, as well as an incredible game series. Smash Bros brough Fire Emblem to the United States, after all. It’s one of the best-selling games on Wii U, despite being out for just six months. With more than 3.5 million units out in the wild, Smash Bros Wii U is a natural platform for giving Splatoon a big boost. Smash Bros 3DS brings that install base even higher.

I wouldn’t even be shocked if Nintendo gives away Splatoon characters on Super Smash Bros for free, just to get the word out. Or maybe the company will introduce a Mewtwo-style deal: Buy Splatoon and get a free Inkling DLC for Smash Bros. Or it'll just charge a piddling amount for it, like they did with Mewtwo. The details don’t matter: The point is, one of those open Super Smash Bros DLC slots is going to be for an Inkling from Splatoon. Mark my words.
