Red Dead Redemption was available to play on Xbox One through the Backward Compatibility program for a short time recently, according to reports from the popular video game forum NeoGAF.

On the forum thread, users were claiming to be able to download Red Dead Redemption and play it after following a few steps. Only the digital versions were working at the time, so those with discs couldn’t get in on the fun. An update from Microsoft has since locked everyone out, and nobody can access the game anymore.

Outside of Red Dead Redemption, other users were reporting that Castlevania: Symphony of the Night and Tekken Tag Tournament 2 also suddenly popped up as available to play on Xbox Ones.

Microsoft’s Major Nelson responded to a post on Reddit explaining the situation.

“Microsoft tests all Xbox 360 games with our emulator to ensure a quality experience across a breadth of titles,” Larry Hryb, the man behind Major Nelson, posted online. “Due to an error, some of the games currently in test were accidentally made available. We have since removed access to those games, and apologize for any confusion this may have caused.”

Hryb didn’t confirm if Red Dead Redemption was going to be included in the backward compatibility program or not, instead hinting there would be some sort of announcement in the next few weeks.

“We will have more information on upcoming releases soon,” Hryb posted.

While it’s unfortunate players can no longer access Red Dead Redemption on Xbox One, it should still get you excited. If Microsoft was testing the game out, it’s very likely it will be included in an upcoming Backward Compatibility update.

So what do you think? Are you interested in playing through Red Dead Redemption on your Xbox One? What other games do you hope get included in the Backward Compatibility program? Let us know your thoughts in the comments section below.
